A Gift I Never Expected

I was recently gifted a piece of jewelry that I created myself which is something that has never happened before.

I was working with a client who knew my brand well and hired me to sort through her mother’s jewelry collection, using cherished family heirlooms to create new pieces for herself and other family members. Like most artists, there are always a few designs you secretly wish you could keep. That’s easy when the materials are your own, but not when they belong to someone else.

From her family treasures, I created more than 60 pieces. Because the project was so extensive, we met several times to review progress and reveal the designs. During our third meeting, she asked which pieces were my favorites. She then shared that her mother had been a deeply generous person and in that spirit, she gifted me one of the necklaces I had made. I was incredibly moved. I almost cried, but managed to hold it together. I am wearing the necklace in the picture. 

I’ve worn that necklace many times since, and it never fails to make me smile. It’s a constant reminder of why I love working with family heirlooms by giving jewelry new life while preserving history, memory, and meaning. These pieces become more than adornment; they are stories, remembrances, and tangible connections to the people we hold close.
